Sy Bounds & Larry Stafford Come Together for Maywood's Youth @ The Maywood Library

I've developed many creative strategies over the years for the youth of Maywood without the help or even mediocre participation of Maywood public officials. My intent here is surely not to grind an ax because I did not receive a helping hand from the very officials charged with providing these services. My point is to set the record straight. My friend Larry has insisted many times that I tell the story about how we (Larry, myself and a few others) tried over and over many times (with no help from the tired old school attitudes permeating just about every institution in Maywood) to set in place innovative, programs and projects designed to demonstrate to local youth that many alternative opportunities were available. We know because we can document them. I'm going to link some of the sites that reveal online proof of the projects that I personally took to every institution in Maywood over the years in the top right column under Sy's Creative Resources. And then I will show photos of others that I've developed on Chicago's westside, over all these years I can put my finger on few decent public servants whom has offered or tried to help as I planned and executed some of these innovative projects. You know what the common statement was when I would approach community leaders over the years was? It was where have you done this before! As opposed to how can we include this into our program, Sy! We've had a long tradition of gatekeepers in our neighborhoods. We are paying an incredibly steep price for blocking projects like the ones that I've tried to implement thru the years. An ongoing lack of traditional job opportunities means that we should place our collective focus on creating and seeking new emerging technology based skills, training and learning. Do it everyday! Create small study groups, small networking groups, small job search groups. You form small teams today in order to compete. And you must collectively combine, evaluate your groups technology potential. And then take your messages, products and services to the general marketplace using social media!

If you want to get started setting up innovative projects in your neighborhood, then you should follow my blog: http://syssaturdaysatorracademy.blogspot.com/

Sy's Early Year 2000 Interview with Senator Obama

Storyline goes in this section

Former Senator Obama has fulfilled the question that I posed to him and senator trotter in that momentus interview back in the year 2000 on the the late Morgan Carters popular Chicago based Omnibus Round Table cable access program.Morgan and I had huddled for strategy and interviews for many aspiring Chicago shakers and movers over the years in the very same studio.
We always relished brainstorming as to the best ways to promote Morgans clients. Many times when Morgan had to do some heavy brainstormimg (he and Wanda would come wherever I was and demand that I spend the night, while Morgan and I figured out how Morgan would add a special twist in promoting some of our communities most talented personalities). Those times were always joyful, focused and historically important in the scheme of Chicago history.Alas Morgan and I both agreed that this young brother was special. And Morgan held Senator Trotter in high regard as well.

There were other journalist waiting to interview young senator Obama that night, but as I was strolling into the studio that evening my friend Morgan came out in the hallway to meet me and he said Sy we're going to have a series of local journalist pose questions interviewing Senator Obama and Senator Donny Trotter (Congressman Rush did not attend) and I want you to ask the first question. He said that he knew the others going to pose some really gritty questions, but he felt that I could set a good, sound pace for the whole process that evening.

So I went inside of the studio and I took my position in the front roll near the entrance door, which was located on the opposite side of the studio from the other journalist who were lining up. All these guys were really top knotch writers that Morgan had personally selected to interview the candidates.I felt honored that Morgan would allow me such a privilege.

Senator Obama was standing almost directly in front of me and while he and senator Trotter were positioning themselves, I took this never released photo of senator Obama while we were waiting. I knew that it was a unique moment. I also took a photo of Morgan as he was preparing his notes, senator Trotter as he was positioning himself just like senator Obama. And I also took a photo of legendary cable camera guy, name Bill. I will try to ad those photos in this post, so that readers can see them as well.

My primary focus for many years was developing innovative, cutting-edge skills training strategies to advance the plight of African American, Latino youth, but be very clear that I've trained and mentored young white men and boys as well. I've never made a difference when a kid comes to me. So that folks who haven't followed my creative path. I will share this blog...

I said that then Senator Obama, now President Obama has fulfilled the spirit and the actual intent of my 1st question that night. You see my question to both of them began when I said...."Fellows I'm sure that both of you have already given this focused attention already, but I will ask anyway. "What plans or platforms have you given thought to that could address specific, practical ways to train young African & Latino men and boys."
Honestly I couldn't feel either response. Both of their answers seem to involved for me. But I had at least put the question on the table. Because no other black politician in Chicago had even addressed short term skills training for youthful urban men and boys (really). When the entire interview session ended, senator Obama walked across the studio to where I was leaning against the wall. And handed me his business card and he said get in touch. I felt very honored that this young brother had asked me to be a part of his team. But I resisted contacting him because I have helped so many other promising young politicians over the years and they all simply disappeared or forgot about me. But I did keep senator Obama's card. And more importantly, I like he have continued to forge ahead to help create innovative, cutting-edge paths for future generations in our community.

I'd like to think that our mutual friend Morgan Carter's faith in young Senator Obama's vision has and will continue to inspire generations. We both were very clear that this young man was going to make a difference. Morgan passed the day after Presidents Obama's inauguration.
And now I will share how President Obama can perhaps took notice how God has led us both in the same direction. Arizona looms large for those of us who see the new vision. In fact
